Obama lifts rating eight points above McCain Birmingham Star Wednesday 3rd September, 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has acquired an eight point lead over Republican rival John McCain, and for the first time cracked the 50 percent milestone in the latest Gallup Poll. This threshold is considered to be a safe number for victory. According to Gallup's Daily Tracking Poll, Obama leads McCain, 50 percent to 42 percent. Meanwhile, the percentage of undecided voters is at its lowest since early June at 8 percent. Gallup has also surmised that the 24-hour news coverage of Hurricane Gustav and Monday's news that the unwed 17-year-old daughter of McCain's vice presidential pick Sarah Palin is pregnant crowded out traditional coverage of the Republican convention, where George Bush has given his support to John McCain. President George Bush has told the Republican convention in St.Paul Minnesota, that John McCain is "ready to lead this nation." President Bush has described McCain as a candidate who understands the dangers of a post-Sept. 11 world and a man who can stand up to attacks from the "angry left." Bush was speaking from the White House via satellite after his scheduled visit to Minnesota on Monday was canceled as federal and local officials attended to relief efforts on the Gulf Coast, which was being battered by Hurricane Gustav. Bush described McCain as an independent politician who has been a stalwart advocate for American military success in Iraq. His wife, Laura Bush, called McCain a "real American hero," and described his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, as a reformer and strong executive. "I'm proud that America's first female vice president will be a Republican woman," she said. |
